The origin of the Japanese word itadakimasu
Watch this video and learn why Japanese people say “itadakimasu” before starting to eat. You will also understand why you do not say it to a person who starts eating as we do in other countries in terms of “enjoy your meal”. It is only used by the person who actually starts eating.
What do you say in your country before you or someone else starts eating? Please share it with us in the comment section.
This is very interesting! I was wondering about the origins of ‘itadakimasu’, after I heard the phrase ‘itadaki no’ before a name or object denoting its supremity or superiority. Thinking the two couldn’t possibly be related, I searched this. Turns out they were. 🙂
Thanks. Although I live in Japan for 12 years I also found out only recently. Languages are full of surprises.
